The Screen and Wall Hanging Collection

We have great pleasure in presenting our exciting collection of beautiful lacquer screens and wall hangings.

All the screens in our collection are made entirely by hand using natural materials and according to traditional processes that reflect the rich cultural and artistic history of Asia.

The traditional decorative folding screen was first created by the Chinese and used as long ago as the 2nd century BC. In China, folding screens rapidly became highly decorative works of art in their own right and, upon reaching Japan in the 8th century, became a major expression of Japanese artistic tradition as well as an integral feature of Japanese interior design schemes.

It was not until the Ming Dynasty in the 17th century that lacquered and painted screens were eventually discovered by the Europeans and rapidly became highly popular. Today's folding screen is as much a work of art as it has always been.

Many of the screens and wall hangings in our collection have been inspired by traditional Japanese screen designs of the early 17th century. The use of gold leaf in screen paintings reached its pinnacle during the Momoyama Period (1573-1615) when some of the finest screens were commissioned by the warrior elite and an increasingly affluent society. Many such examples are included in our collection.

We also have a small range of modern and contemporary screens. Private commissions are also welcome.
